About me

I joined UWE in January 2013 after 5 years working in initial teacher education at Bath Spa University. Prior to that, I was a primary school teacher in schools in and around Bristol. I co-ordinate the primary mathematics team and work with pre-service teachers on both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

My research interests relate to maths anxiety both in children and pre-service teachers. I am also interested in the nature of primary mathematics teachers' mathematical knowledge and in children's mathematical cognition, particularly working memory. More recently I have become interested in the role of personality, or temperament on teaching and learning, particularly on how 'quiet' teachers can use their thoughtful and reflective personalities to become highly effective in the classroom.

Area of expertise

My doctoral study looked at the role of working memory in children's mathematical learning and specifically explored the possibility that low-tech, low-budget working memory training might support gains in children's mathematical learning.
