About me

I am a Senior Lecturer in Education at UWE Bristol, specialising in teacher education, Computing education, digital learning, digital policy, tutoring and the responsible use of artificial intelligence in teaching, learning and assessment.

I taught and led Information Technology and Computer Science in secondary schools across Bristol and North Somerset for more than 20 years. This included subject and curriculum leadership, teacher development, pastoral education, and work across department, faculty, whole-school and regional contexts.

I now teach across postgraduate teacher education and undergraduate Education programmes. My work supports educators to develop the knowledge, professional judgement and critical digital literacy needed to use technology well, rather than treating technological innovation as an end in itself. I lead the School of Education and Childhood’s work on AI, including professional development, assessment design, digital pedagogy, and guidance for safe, ethical and educationally purposeful practice.

I lead on the PGCE Tutoring programme for tutors working with individuals and small groups, at home an internationally. This work recognises tutoring as a distinct professional practice requiring pedagogical knowledge, relational expertise, ethical judgement and responsiveness to individual learners. It includes the development of flexible online routes through which tutors can strengthen their practice, critically evaluate their impact and engage with evidence-informed approaches to learning, assessment, inclusion and safeguarding.

My current research examines how generative AI is changing education and the professional role of the teacher. I am particularly interested in how learners judge the credibility and authority of AI-generated information; how assessment can continue to provide meaningful evidence of learning; and how teachers can work with AI while retaining responsibility, expertise and human relationships.

My wider interests include online and international learning, educational technology policy, inclusive Computing education, tutoring and professional practice, teacher recruitment and development, and widening participation in education.

I welcome opportunities to collaborate with schools, universities and professional organisations on teacher education, tutoring, policy, Computing education, AI literacy, assessment and responsible educational technology.
