About me

Mark Avery is a Senior Lecturer in Education specialising in Secondary Computer Science Education. A long-time tech enthusiast, I have taught in and led IT and Computer Science departments in schools in North Somerset and Bristol for over two decades. Experienced as a middle leader and involved in both pastoral and academic development in Secondary education at department, faculty, whole school, and regional level, I have a breadth of experience relevant to those interested in joining the profession and supporting them on their transformative journey.

As an academic, my research focus is on technology enhanced learning, online learning, the use of Ai in the curriculum and whole school workflows, child perceptions of the epistemological value of Ai teaching tools as mediated sources of authoritative knowledge and how this perception alters the professional identity of the teacher, increasing opportunity for white working class males, redressing the gender and ethnic imbalance of Computer Science teachers and lecturers, and the influence of technology changes on educational policy.
