About me

After completing a BSc(Hons) Psychology and an MSc Computer Science at the University of Bristol, I worked as a software developer in commercial and public sectors on a wide variety of applications. I completed a PhD at UWE in 2012 entitled 3D Face Recognition Using Photometric Stereo and now work as a Professor in the Centre for Machine Vision on a wide range of projects, mainly in agri-tech and deep learning.

Example current projects:
- JPIAMR JPIAMR2021-169: FARM interventions to Control Antimicrobial ResistancE, SRUC, University of Copenhagen, PorkColumbia, University College Dublin
- AHRC AH/X006522/1: An investigation of 3D technologies applied to historic textiles for improved understanding, conservation and engagement
- IUK-KTP 10009531: Potato image analysis, BHive Innovation Ltd
- BBSRC BB/V012584/1: HOMEs under the microscope: Citizen-led characterisation of airborne micropLAstic sources, University of Leeds

More details of my work can be found on my webpage.

I have supervised two PhDs to completion:

- 3D video based detection of early lameness in dairy cattle
- 3D plant phenotyping system using photometric stereo

I currently supervise 7 PhD students within UWE, the Farscope CDT and SWBio schemes.

I am an Associate Editor for Elsevier's Computers and Electronics in Agriculture.

Area of expertise

2D and 3D Face Recognition and the application of human idiosyncrasies. Photometric stereo 2.5D acquisition hardware using near infrared lighting. Reflectance mapping and bi-directional reflectance functions. Application of 3D modelling to livestock analysis. Long range photometric stereo. Machine learning and machine vision applied to a range of agri-tech areas
