About me

architect / lecturer / PhD researcher / short film maker

Latest PhD film submitted for AHRC film awards 2017

Matthew is a qualified architect who is currently studying for a design research PhD entitled Design Leap! The aim of the PhD research is to develop a divergent tool to facilitate the emergence of creative ideas in the early stages of the architectural design process and actively explore the thresholds between analogue media and digital media. The PhD sees Matthew collaborating with leading architectural practices and testing the tool on live projects.

Matthew also collaborates with the students he teaches at the university, which has led to some great overlaps between practice and studio. An example of this being starting a collaboration with South West practices and UWE students to reimagine how Birnbeck Pier near Weston-super-Mare might be redeveloped. Link to film

Prior to this Matthew worked with students on a small-scale architectural competition to design an architectural intervention to celebrate W.B. Yeats 150th Birthday. The students and Matthew were highly commended for their entry, which included submissions from across the globe.

Matthew has worked for both large and small architectural practices. In 2009 Matthew cofounded an architecture practice with a colleague from Fielden Clegg Bradley studios where they undertook a number of projects including: international competitions, historic reuse, domestic housing, community projects, prototype hub buildings and a number of art related projects. Major clients included; The National Trust, Liverpool Biennale, Hazeley Academy, Bath & North East Somerset Council, UNESCO, Friends of Longacre Hall, Bristol University and Bristol Cathedral's, The Revd Canon Tim Higgins.

In 2011 Matthew completed an MA examining how film might be used as a design tool in architecture. In 2013 one of the films produced during the MA was screened in Federation Square Melbourne as part of the Cinecity architectural film project. The film has subsequently gone on to be screened at the; Architecture Film Festival in Lisbon 26-29th September 2013, the University of Sydney Research Visions exhibition 4th October 2013 and at the ARCFILMFEST Santiago Chile 17-20th October 2013.

Matthew currently works across all levels of the architecture school from the Architecture and Product Design foundation studio, Architecture BSc Year 2 studio and the Master of Architecture Year 1 studio.

Matthew also coordinates the UWE IBSTOCK Lunchtime talk series, with colleague Dr Matthew Jones, which regularly draws 100+ students to see practices from around the world. The series is also filmed by Steve Brown and links to the talks can be found here

Matthew also has experience coordinating and delivering exhibitions. In the recent past Matthew coordinated and delivered the first ever UWE London Architecture Degree show, which was attended by both UWE's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Steve West and George Ferguson, now former Mayor of Bristol and past RIBA President.
