About me
Micah Hassell is an accomplished Senior Lecturer in Policing at the University of the West of England, with a distinguished career in law enforcement spanning over two decades. Based in Gwent, he brings extensive experience in operational leadership, strategic project delivery, and academic excellence. Known for maintaining high standards, integrity, and professionalism, Micah excels at building resilient relationships across diverse teams and stakeholders.
In his academic role as a module leader for occupational competencies in Year 1, Micah designs and delivers curriculum for probationary police officers and undergraduate students, ensuring alignment with College of Policing standards. He thrives in blended learning environments and has driven innovation in student engagement through digital platforms.
Micah’s policing journey began with the Metropolitan Police Service, where he undertook frontline duties in some of London’s most high-demand areas. Operating in fast-paced, high-pressure environments, he developed a strong foundation in incident management, public engagement, and operational resilience. These formative years shaped his ability to remain calm under pressure, make rapid decisions, and connect meaningfully with diverse communities. His professionalism, adaptability, and commitment to public safety earned him recognition throughout his career.
His early career included specialist roles in both traffic and firearms units. As a traffic officer, he worked extensively on fast roads and motorways, leading investigations into complex and often catastrophic collisions. These investigations required meticulous evidence gathering, including forensic analysis, CCTV review, and witness management, often under intense public and media scrutiny. In his firearms role, Micah served as part of an armed response unit, responding to critical incidents involving firearms and other high-threat scenarios. Trained to the highest tactical standards, he regularly led teams in spontaneous armed deployments, demonstrating composure, decisiveness, and effectiveness under extreme pressure.
Micah holds a BSc in Criminology and Psychology, an MSc in Forensic Psychology, and a PGCert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Education and has achieved Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
Area of expertise
I am interested in further research to examine whether psychological tests can be used to detect criminal tendencies in police officers at recruitment and/or during an officers service.
