About me

Until recently, I had been developing my career mainly in school settings. As a teacher I was driven by a belief that education provides young people with life enriching choices and opportunities. But I regularly saw the strangle hold that emotional difficulties could have on a young person, often creating a debilitating barrier to learning. Reacting to this problem, I embarked on Counselling training, here at UWE, and returned to the education workforce as a School Counsellor.

Now I combine both professions in the UWE role of Lecturer in Counselling and Psychotherapy. I continue the push for much needed emotional support for our young people in schools, working with the BACP's campaign for a paid School Counsellor in every school as a member of their expert reference group in school and college counselling.

July 2023 marked the publication of School Based Counselling - the essential guide for school leaders, mental health leads and comissioners. This was a heartfelt collaborative project with Jo Holmes, children and young people's lead from the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. We intend that this guidance will be of genuine practical use to all schools wanting to introduce, build or enhance a school-based counselling service.
