About me

Dr Philippa Carr is a Senior Lecturer in Qualitative Research Methods at UWE Bristol.  She teaches Social Psychology and Qualitative Research Methods at postgraduate and undergraduate level. Philippa supervises undergraduate and postgraduate research projects on social and economic inequality.

Area of expertise

Her research explores how wealth inequality is presented in the media. Philippa has explored how the super-rich use talk about psychological concepts to legitimise extreme wealth in television broadcasts. She is interested in how people account for practices such as inheritance and tax avoidance that impede social mobility. Her research has examined how entertainment documentaries can be analysed as a form of political communication using Discursive Psychology.

Philippa is a British Psychological Society (BPS) Chartered Psychologist. She is a committee member of the BPS West Midlands branch and Qualitative Methods in Psychology section.

She would welcome enquiries from potential PhD students who are interested in using Discursive Psychology to explore wealth inequality.
