About me
Promise D. Nukah is a civil and structural engineer, researcher, and higher education academic with over 15 years of professional experience spanning structural engineering design, construction, project management, engineering consultancy, planning, teaching, and research. He holds a PhD in Civil Engineering and a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (PGCert LTHE) from the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), UK. He also holds a Master degree in Structural Engineering and a Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from Rivers State University, Nigeria.
His doctoral research focused on the development of low-carbon concrete and a machine-learning-integrated model for predicting strength and embodied carbon in lightweight concrete production, bringing together sustainable construction materials, experimental research, computational modelling, and artificial intelligence. His research interests include low-carbon construction materials, sustainable and resilient infrastructure, structural performance, machine learning, predictive modelling, and the application of digital technologies to civil and structural engineering.
Alongside his academic and research activities, Promise has extensive industry experience in civil and structural engineering, including structural analysis and design, construction supervision, technical consultancy, project planning, and engineering project management. He has worked across residential, commercial, industrial, offshore, marine, and oil-and-gas projects, developing practical expertise in structural design, construction quality assurance, technical reporting, project coordination, and engineering standards and compliance.
He currently contributes to engineering education and research, with teaching experience across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in engineering practice, sustainability, advanced construction materials, geotechnics, soil mechanics, surveying and GIS, and civil engineering design. His Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, together with his teaching experience, supports his commitment to research-informed, inclusive and practice-oriented engineering education.
Promise is particularly interested in developing engineering solutions that reduce the environmental impact of construction while improving the safety, durability, resilience, and performance of infrastructure. His work seeks to integrate established engineering principles with emerging technologies, including machine learning and computational modelling, to support more sustainable and data-informed engineering practice.
He is a Graduate Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), UK, a Corporate Member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), a Registered Engineer with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN)
