About me

I am a Senior Lecturer in Social Work at UWE, Bristol and the Programme Leader for social work CPD including the Professional Development (Social Work) awards. I am the Module Leader for:

  • Best Interests Assessment (CPD)
  • Working with Adults in Social Work Practice (2nd year BSc Social Work)
  • Social Work with Adults at Risk (3rd year BSc Social Work)

I have taught on the UWE Best Interests Assessment module (a Social Work England approved Best Interests Assessor (BIA) qualifying module) since October 2008.

I teach adult social work law and practice, including adult safeguarding, mental capacity, deprivation of liberty and human rights, and LGBTQ+ identity across undergraduate and postgraduate qualifying and postqualifying social work programmes.

I am registered with Social Work England as a social worker and best interests assessor and have practice experience in adult social work, mental health and as a Practice Educator, BIA and DoLS Coordinator. I have a PGCE in Learning and Skills and am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I am nearing completion of the Professional Doctorate in Social Work at Cardiff University.

My research interests include applied mental health and human rights law for ethical social work practice, LGBTQ+ identity and experiences and creative qualitative research methods.

Area of expertise

Adult social care and social work practice, Best Interests Assessor practice, mental health, human rights, mental capacity, best interests and deprivation of liberty decision making and anti-oppressive practice including LGBTQ+ identities.
