About me
I am a Senior Lecturer in Social Work at UWE, Bristol and the Programme Leader for social work CPD, including Professional Development (Social Work).
I lead the following modules:
- Best Interests Assessment (CPD)
- Working with Adults in Social Work Practice (2nd year BSc Social Work)
- Research Proposal Project (3rd year BSc Social Work)
I have taught on the UWE Best Interests Assessment module (Social Work England approved Best Interests Assessor (BIA) qualifying module) since October 2008.
I teach adult social work law and practice, including adult social care practice, safeguarding, mental capacity and deprivation of liberty. I also teach human rights, ethical practice and research and LGBTQ+ mental health and rights across UWE's undergraduate and postgraduate social work qualifying programmes.
I am registered with Social Work England as a social worker and best interests assessor and have practice experience in adult social work, mental health and as a Practice Educator, BIA and DoLS Coordinator. I have a PGCE in Learning and Skills and am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I graduated with the Doctorate in Social Work from Cardiff University in 2025.
My research interests include mental health and human rights law for social work practice, LGBTQ+ identity and rights, queer and creative research methods plus the experiences of older, queer fans.
Area of expertise
Adult social care and social work practice, Best Interests Assessor practice, mental health, human rights, mental capacity, best interests and deprivation of liberty decision making and anti-oppressive practice with marginalised communities, including LGBTQ+ and queer experiences
