About me

Richard is a Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Product Design and a Senior Lecturer in Product Design Engineering at the University of the West of England (UWE), based in the College of Arts, Technology and Environment (CATE).

After a first degree in Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College, Richard went to the Royal College of Art (RCA) and obtained a Masters Degree in the Industrial Design Engineering department. Graduation from the RCA was followed by a Research Associate position at the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design, a multidisciplinary institute for inclusive design.

Richard then moved to Loughborough University to study for a PhD, where his research was focused on understanding design consultancies, their design process, and attitudes towards Sustainable Design. His research experience includes EPSRC funded research projects with companies like Boots and Philips, including the CLEVER (Closed Loop Emotionally Valuable E-waste Recovery) multidisciplinary initiative, which aimed to design ways of reducing electronic waste and closing the loop on valuable materials. He has been part of many interdisciplinary teams providing expertise in Design Process and Sustainable Design, working with colleagues in fields such as AI Ethics, Materials Science, Human Geography, Information Systems & Operations Management, and Robotics.

Richard is currently based in the College of Arts, Technology and Environment (CATE) and is involved in the development, delivery and assessment of modules that form part of the BSc (Hons) Product Design Technology and BA (Hons) Product Design programmes. Richard also continues his work in Sustainable Design and engages more generally in research and knowledge exchange within the domain of Product Design. Most recently his research has been focused on Robotics and AI Ethics in the context of a Circular Economy. Richard is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
