About me

I have been a full-time senior lecturer in journalism at UWE since August 2013. Prior to this I have worked in international television news for the past 20 years for Reuters Television (RTV), Sky News and most recently at Associated Press Television (APTN) as its Europe and Africa Editor.
In recent years I have combined television work at APTN with teaching journalism and communications on BA and MA courses at the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies (JOMEC) at Cardiff University and Bath Spa University.
In 2013 I was awarded a PhD for my thesis ‘Accounting for News: A discourse analysis of the talk of television journalists’ from Cardiff University. My research looks at the construction of news values and news work in contemporary British television news through an examination of the discourse of industry practitioners from the BBC, Channel 4, Sky News, Reuters Television and Associated Press Television News.
I have also been involved in a number of media research projects funded variously by the BBC, the Rowntree Foundation and Mediawise. My research interests include international news, news agencies, journalism education and media ethics. I am currently working on a project to examine the shifting discourse of journalism values in journalism students both at college and beyond into the media industry.
