About me

I'm a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Sciences in the Centre for Research in Biosciences at the University of the West of England, UWE Bristol. My main research interests are in marine microbial ecology, aquatic biogeochemistry and understanding the cycling of organic matter and nutrients in aquatic systems. I also have research projects investigating the impact of microplastics on the environment and human health and in the application of environmental DNA (eDNA) for species monitoring and conservation.

I co-lead the Biospheric Microplastics Research Cluster (BMRC) at UWE with Dr Ben Williams. You can follow our work in our blog here

I'm passionate about supporting the next generation of environmental scientists, widening our scientific understanding of aquatic microbial ecology and working to provide solutions to environmental issues. I contribute to a number of environmental programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels within the Department of Applied Sciences.

Area of expertise

Microbial processing of organic matter and nutrients in aquatic systems.
Understanding the health implications of environmental microplastics.
