About me

Thomas Draper completed his BSc and MSc in Chemistry at the University of Bristol, focusing on catalysis and air-sensitive inorganic synthesis. He earned his PhD at the University of Sussex in 2016. His doctoral research, situated at the interface of inorganic and physical chemistry, involved air-sensitive organometallic synthesis, small molecule activation, heterogeneous photocatalysis, and nanotechnology.

He then worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate with Professor Andrew Adamatzky at UWE Bristol, studying the creation, optimisation, and use of liquid marbles in unconventional computing. Following this, he joined Dr Juan Pérez-Mercader’s group at Harvard University as a Postdoctoral Fellow on the “Top-down Synthesis of an Ex-novo Chemical Artificial Living System” project, where he focused on molecular Turing Machines.

Dr Draper is now a Research Fellow in the Health Tech Hub at UWE Bristol, and custodian of both the Prototyping and Electronics Laboratories. Projects he has contributed to at the Health Tech Hub include a Cancer Research UK funded molecular biology project developing a test for the early detection of pancreatic cancer, as well as numerous collaborations with external businesses.

He currently plays an extensive role in the NHS CoDE project, investigating the use of cutting-edge technology, including artificial intelligence, to support innovation in the NHS.
