About me

I joined UWE to study for my PhD and began teaching in 1997.  I have taught on a wide variety of modules based around the 19th and 20th-century British and American novel and am currently module leader for 'Genre and Creative Writing' and 'Occasions for Writing'.

My research is broadly centred on contemporary novels written by women and I am particularly interested in representations of ageing.  My publications include The Older Woman in Recent Fiction (2004) and Brontë’s Jane Eyre (2010).  Most recently I have been presenting papers on Angela Carter's creation of a Gothic Bristol in her 'Bristol trilogy' to both academic and non-academic audiences. My next project concerns the shared strategies that authors have used to portray successful ageing.
