About me
Senior Lecturer - BSc (Hons) Nursing
I completed my nurse education at the Avon and Gloucestershire College of Health (1992-1995) and have been a Registered Nurse (Child) since then. My clinical background has predominitely focused on paediatric surgical specialitites, having worked in both short-stay and long-stay surgical units, cardiology and cardiac surgery (Bristol Royal Hospital for Children), burns and reconstructive surgery and neurology and neurosurgery (Frenchay Hospital, Bristol). I spent 13 years in clinical practice, during which time I worked as both a staff nurse and a senior staff nurse. For 12 of those 13 years, I was also a practice assessor and undertook responsibility for assessing nursing students in clinical placement.
In 2008, I made the move into full time nurse education. In my current role as a senior lecturer in nursing, I teach and facilitate a range of theory and practice modules for foundation and undergradaute nursing students (pre-registration) and post-registration master's level students, and lead on modules in the undergraduate programme. I have particular interests in the history of nursing, especially children's nursing, and the use of fiction literature in nurse education to enhance compassion. I am curently one of the Admissions leads for children's nursing at UWE Bristol, and have previously undertaken the role of programme lead for children's nursing. In addition, I'm a member of the CYP Nurse Academic Network UK and the Collaboration for Compassion in Healthcare Education and I'm currently working towards a professional doctorate in education (EdD).
