About me
Allison is an experienced Architect, Urban Designer, and educator with a distinguished career spanning over three decades across North America and Europe. Currently a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Architecture and Planning Programme. Prior to joining UWE I taught at University of California, Berkeley, the Welsh School of Architecture / Cardiff University, and Denmark's International Study Programme (affiliated with the University of Copenhagen).
As a registered Architect in the United States I worked on community, university, water treatment and residential projects with Turnbull Griffin Haesloop and BurksToma Architects. As Head of Design at Gehl in Copenhagen, she led projects with public and private clients across the UK, France, Germany, and Scandinavia, focusing on cycling and active travel networks and rethinking public space use. Notably, her team won the international competition for the redevelopment of the Saint Sauveur district of Lille in 2014.
Allison holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a focus on Architecture and Design from the University of Michigan and a Masters of Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, an Auroran with Advanced HE, and has completed Called To Lead at UWE.
Her academic and professional interests revolve around enhancing the use of public and open spaces, addressing inherent and unintended invitations or barriers to use and access, and improving the education of future professionals in architecture and urban planning. This extends to consideration of the education of those entrusted with the built environment, and the language used to articulate quality, form, and intention. She emphasizes human-scale and community-focused design, drawing on methodologies from Jan Gehl. In her teaching and practice, she integrates themes of identity, use, and community.
She is committed to bringing international best practices to teaching across modules, fostering human-centred development, and raising awareness of public spaces and movement. Her mentorship roles at department, university, and community levels demonstrate her dedication to continuous learning and development. Through her strategic work, she aims to improve quality of life and equity in development and design.
