About me

Laura is Associate Professor for Engineering in Society in the School of Engineering. Laura is a Core Member of the Centre for Environment, Society, and Resilience and an Associate Member of the Science Communication Unit at UWE Bristol. She lectures on Sustainability, Climate Communications, Human Centred Design, and Professional Skills for MSc and Undergraduate Science and Engineering degrees. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. 

Laura leads the Inspire Sustainability community and schools engagement programme, supported by the Climate Action Hub education and action projects. She holds a PhD in Psychology, and explores community engagement from a social cognitive and social identity perspective. Laura has been Principal Investigator of several research projects, as well as managing communications for international research collaborations, and publishes widely on these topics. Her research interests include the circular economy, community energy, community climate action, and developing involvement in research for under-served audiences, particularly for sustainable development.

  • Children as Engineers: Engineering and Society for primary schools
  • Unkindest Cut: Entwining dance and science to explore mental health at science festivals.
  • Robots vs. Animals: Exploring the ingenuity of nature
  • Science Live: Exploring live public science events
  • Celebration Choir: choral singing therapy for people with neurological conditions.

Laura previously worked as a trained science journalist with extensive experience of working in the media and with the public. She is passionate about climate action and links to several advisory boards throughout Bristol and the West of England.
