About me

I joined UWE in November 2016. I am Associate Director for Student Academic Journey (Postgraduate Business & Management Programmes). I have taught on a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate modules including Strategic HRM, HRM in the Business Environment, and HRM in the Global Business Environment. I also supervise postgraduate dissertation and PhD projects.

I am a member of the HR, Work and Employment Research Group. My PhD, awarded by the University of Bath in 2017, was a four year ethnographic study which explored how individuals in an international search and rescue team discursively constructed their volunteer identities. My research interests centre on volunteers, the performativity of gender, and women's experiences in male-dominated organisations.

In 2023, I collaborated with the Antarctic Fire Angels (https://antarcticfireangels.co.uk/) in a project titled ‘Ordinary women doing extraordinary things: empowering the future female workforce’. This involved outreach work in eight local junior schools and 2000+ children, as well as a knowledge exchange event for staff, students, alumni, and employees from a wide variety of local organisations, which explored the barriers women face in entering traditionally male dominated disciplines or pursuing their aspirational identities and careers.

I was awarded funding by the Society for the Advancement of Management Studies (SAMS)  to deliver a ‘Principles and practices for researching identities’ workshop in October 2023. This workshop was aimed at the development of doctoral students and Early Career Researchers in this area of management studies.

In 2023, I co-delivered an evidence and practice- based ‘Inclusive Leadership’ workshop for 300+ Ministry of Defence (DE&S) employees, and am available for similar consultancy projects.

More recently, I've been awarded HEIF funding to collaborate with a local science and education charity to reimagine their vision for volunteering, particularly the attraction, development and retention of local, talented, volunteers. My co-researcher is PhD candidate, Winifred Onyemachi, who is exploring the expectations and motivation of volunteers from an individual and organisational perspective. (https://people.uwe.ac.uk/Person/WinifredOnyemaechi).

I previously worked in Learning and Development as a South Wales & West Regional Trainer in HBOS Plc, as well as for the Royal Navy at Bristol University and as a Manager in a Speech & Language Therapy Research Unit in North Bristol NHS Trust.

Outside of work, I am an international search and rescue volunteer. I deployed, as part of the Serve On team, to the Turkiye earthquake in 2023. (https://www.serveon.org.uk/)

Please email me to arrange a date and time to meet.
